Long term usage review: Logitech G502 Proteus Core
On the 23rd of April 2016, I placed an order for the Logitech G502 Proteus Core gaming mouse based on the reviews of various renowned youtubers like UAC, MKBHD & Unbox therapy. In the words of UAC - “This is the best mouse there has ever been”. I waited for months to upgrade to this from my Dragonwar mouse that I bought mainly because of its light effects. And I have to say, this might not have as many light effects as the Dragonwar one (no RGB 😐) but if you’re a gamer or a content creator you’re already a fan of this and the G502 needs no introduction.
On the 25th of April, the G502 gets delivered to my doorstep and I was absolutely blown away by its packaging. No wonder it is recommended by the best. Anyways, once I had plugged it in to my system and downloaded the drivers, I was shocked to see the sheer amount of button assignments you can make to this. A total of 15 button assignments can be made to this mouse at a time. Literally everything starting from media controls like- Play/Pause, Increase/Decrease volume to substituting Ctrl+C & Ctrl+V and so much more, the mouse has no boundaries to which you can modify the button assignments according to your needs. There is obviously a feature for multiple profiles to switch from so that you can use the mouse to it’s full potential. But what sets it apart is the game profiles pre-set by Logitech for reputed titles. My main motive for purchasing this was to play Call of Duty and I had never experienced gameplay like this before. The mouse has DPI settings of up to 12000 DPI and I could set the DPI precisely the exact point where I wanted it to. And if that was not enough of an experience, Logitech provides additional weights along with the mouse to add to it for that precise control. So you can ensure that your mouse works exactly how you want it to.
Once you start your games with the Logitech G Hub® software, the software automatically detects what game you are playing and sets the mouse profile accordingly. Thus, saving you the hustle of trying different pre-sets. Now obviously one has the option to make changes according to his/her own will for the kind of setting he/she wants. Coming to the gaming experience, shooting with this is as precise as it ever could be. There are tons of gameplay footage available on YouTube to really witness the kind of gameplay awaits you with this. I obviously played other titles too with the G502, renowned titles like CS:GO, GTA V work like a charm with this and I assure you the mouse will keep you stuck to your chairs to keep playing more.
Now obviously one doesn’t spend his days just playing games. On a regular basis, you go through files, browse through the internet and do so much more. This is where I really understood the kind of benefit I had with the G502; the G502 has a feature called “Free Scroll ” which basically gives the scroll wheel of the mouse to scroll to the end of the page at one go without you having to slowly scroll through the entire page. And with a click of a button the scroll wheel gets back to normal like a normal mouse scroll wheel. Now, even though this feature might seem gimmicky, it is a personal favorite of mine, and I felt the need for this when scrolling through those ling articles or spreadsheets for that one line/word/number. Honestly one doesn’t understand how useful this can be unless he/she actually uses it. Also, speaking of article surfing, on a day to day basis, I have to go through tons of articles for my assignments and college, the extra buttons on the side of the G502 makes it super convenient to go back and forth pages with just clicking the buttons with your thumb instead of you having to go and reach all the way out to the corner of the page to click the “back” button.
With all that said, here’s how this mouse has kept up for the past 4-5 years. It got me through High school to college and is still my daily driver, and all though it is the “wireless” age, I wouldn’t change this mouse for anything. For the past 5 years, this mouse has not had a single scratch, a single buffer or even stuttered one bit. Till date the only thing that has happened is that it has collected some dust between the buttons but that is honestly because of me not cleaning it up regularly. But on a personal note, if I had to recommend it to anyone I would do it blindfolded. This is hands down the best piece of hardware I have purchased till date.
